About Sri Lankan Delights
About Suren
Suren (pronounce Su-rain) was born in Sri Lanka and learned to make food from his father. He was a chef in a hotel and Suren would help him and learn from his kitchen. Suren also grew up with lots of aunties, each one having a different way to make the family meal. He lived in Arugam Bay and that’s where he met his Scottish wife in 2016. He moved to Scotland in early 2020 and was encouraged to get his food out there by friends. Sri Lankan Delights was born in April 2020, and started with a small customer base. It quickly expanded to hundreds of customers with weekly deliveries, pop ups, festivals, community events and family parties.
Suren has an deep love and passion for making healthy food and helping people, which is brought together in Sri Lankan Delights. He knows how to put good vibes into food and all his food is 100% plant based, free of chemicals, additives and nasty sugars.
Why plant based? Sri Lanka has a strong spiritual connection and to be clean enough for temple you need to have a pure diet free from meat, eggs and fish. A plant based diet is considered the highest vibration and the best way to practice kindness, compassion and spirituality.
This was the traditional diet for many Sri Lankan people. Suren’s granny, who lived in good health until she was in her 90’s, had 9 children was a vegan. When she heard Surens new wife was also a vegan she said “good for you!”. Jen, Surens wife has been a vegan for over 25 years and supports him with his mission!
Living in East Lothian, we are very fortunate to have fantastic local farms, especially Chapel Hill Farm outside North Berwick, who have been growing organic vegetables for over 20 years. Sri Lankan Delights gets most of their vegetables from them in the winter months. It’s wonderful to have vegetables growing, then harvested, prepared and made into a yummy curry all in one day!
Sri Lankan Delights has a high standard of care, kindness and quality. You can find out more about Suren and Sri Lankan Delights on his website or instagram srilankadelights1
He has recently opened his kitchen at the Mart in East Linton and has lots of exciting new ideas coming soon!
